Professor Mauro Cassese has been appointed director of the new Cardiac Surgery Department of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo (Foggia), one of the flagship centers of both health care and scientific research in the health sector in central and southern Italy.
With over 1,000 beds and about thirty highly specialized departments (both medicine and surgery), the health facility is a non-profit institution that has been reinvesting in itself for decades, for the benefit of the community. It was the natural development for a nursing home founded in 1956 by Padre Pio, a Capuchin friar, much loved and venerated by Catholics all over the world and proclaimed a saint in 2002.
As proof that the universal values that put humanity at the center can go hand in hand with excellence and innovation in healthcare, Casa Sollievo has grown over the years, thanks to donations and good management practices, to become a real "hospital citadel." It houses a seven-floor polyclinic, an Institute of Regenerative Medicine which "produces" stem cells, and now also a brand-new hybrid cardiac surgery center, which Mauro Cassese has been appointed to direct.
Moreover, the San Giovanni Rotondo hospital has always opened its doors to the best Italian professionals in every specialized branch, to guarantee performance in step with the best European hospitals. The hybrid center of the new Cardiac Surgery Department, the most technologically advanced in Italy, represents an important challenge for the Casa Sollievo and for the heart team directed by Prof. Cassese.
